Thursday Thirteen: 13 Romance Tropes I Like

Thursday Thirteen

Thursday Thirteen is a weekly meme with a simple theme: each Thursday you blog a list of 13 things. What kind of things? Any kind! Just come up with a list theme and run with it.

Brianna’s List:

  1. Celebrity falls in love with commoner. This is one of my favorite tropes. I love seeing how the commoner deals with the instant celebrity status that comes with dating a celebrity. It’s how the commoner deals with it that is the deciding factor for me.
  2. Friends to lovers. Who doesn’t love a good friends to lovers romance? Being friends first makes for a sturdier foundation in the relationship.
  3. Brother’s best friend. Especially when their relationship is secret at first.
  4. Boss/Employee.
  5. Billionaire. Makes for fun reading.
  6. Enemies to lovers. Bring on the tension and the angst! It does make for great sex.
  7. Mistaken identity. I like to see how these pan out. How long will the real identity remain secret? How will they react?
  8. Opposite side of the tracks. The struggles. Trying to relate. The adjustment. I like it all.
  9. Friends with benefits. Casual hook ups turn into something more, and it usually surprises one or both parties.
  10. Unrequited love. Usually the crushee is secretly in love with the crusher.
  11. One night stand turns into something more. Love happens when you least expect it.
  12. When the hero wants something more and the heroine thinks she wants a fling. I love it when the guy wants more.
  13. Forbidden love. Loving someone you shouldn’t can be great reading material.

J9’s List:

  1. Damaged leads finding their HEA.
  2. Friends to lovers.
  3. Wallflower is noticed by the rake.
  4. Enemies to lovers.
  5. Plain/average leads get the hottie.
  6. Leads with different socio-economic backgrounds.
  7. Steampunk world building.
  8. Men in uniform.
  9. Opposites attract.
  10. Couples who are forced together due to circumstances (AKA, marriage of convenience).
  11. Romances with mature leads.
  12. Interracial relationships.
  13. Marriage of convenience.

  1. those are some of my favorites too. I enjoy the friends to lover too, along with the your number 1 Brianna :)

    1. If you have any celeb/commoner recommendations, let me know :)

  2. I LOVE unrequited love stories, too. I'm also a total sucker for romances where the hero rescues the heroine. It's not that I don't love strong heroines who can take care of themselves. It's just that I find it romantic.

And seriously, MEN IN UNIFORM - yes please!

  3. I enjoy all the tropes listed above plus It Happened In Vegas and romances with Ice Hockey in them.

  4. Friends to Lovers is my absolute favorite :)

    1. I adore it sooo much, especially in MM romance.

  5. Billionaires always make for good romance. As do men in uniform. *swoons*

  6. I love your list, Brianna! All of them would me on my list too, especially #13! Happy reading.

  7. I have to say I do love the Forbidden Love type of romance but that is probably because I named my blog Pages of Forbidden Love. Guess I just love all of those YA stories where the two could not possibly be together because one is an angel and one is a demon or something like that.
I also like when they are best friends first and then develop a better relationship with time.

    Great choices!

  8. I love second chance romances.
