Blog Tour and Giveaway: The Dark Divine by Bree Despain

Today I have Bree Despain here as part of The Dark Divine blog tour. The Dark Divine was released on 12/22/2009 and is available in most bookstores in the US and Canada. If you aren't able to find it in your local store, you can always order it online from places like Indiebound, B&N.com, Books-A-Million, Borders, and Amazon.

I am very excited to have Bree stop by here today. She kindly answered some of my questions.

What was your road to publication like?
Long and bumpy with a sudden sprint at the end. And totally worth the journey.
I wrote for 9 years before I landed an agent—but after I got an agent everything unfolded rather quickly. We sold the manuscript within a matter of weeks to my publisher, and then the book hit the shelves only 11 months later.

When can we expect to see the sequel released?
THE LOST SAINT is slated to be released on December 28th, 2010. That’s less than 9 months away!

What inspired you to write The Dark Divine?
A conversation between a brother and a sister that suddenly popped into my head late one night. The brother was warning his sister to stay away from a dangerous ex-friend who had recently come back to town. I was so intrigued by this conversation and the emotions these characters were feeling toward this old friend, I had to know what was going on in their lives.

What did you learn from writing The Dark Divine?
When in doubt, always add more sexual tension [ I love this woman! ]

What was the most challenging aspect of writing The Dark Divine?
Writer’s block. It took me 4 years to write TDD—but that’s mostly because I had to put it away for 2 years in the middle of that because of writer’s block. (I blame pregnancy and having a newborn who didn’t know how to eat or sleep.) I worked on other projects in the meantime, but the day the ideas for TDD started coming back to me was one of the best days of my life.

What book are you reading now?
ONCE WAS LOST by Sara Zarr

Who are your favorite authors?
Meg Cabot, Michelle Jaffe, Elizabeth Peters, Sara Zarr, Laurie Halse Anderson, Emily Wing Smith, and Suzanne Collins.

What genres do you like to read?
Pretty much anything YA is going to be up my alley. Although, I prefer books that have at least some sort of love story in it.

What are 5 things that people might not know about you?

  1. I’m a compulsive door lock checker. I have to check the locks every night before I go to bed—but not only just look at them, I have to touch them to prove to my brain that they’re really locked and it’s not just a visual trick.  (I know, crazy huh?)
  2. I can’t stand anything touching my neck. Sometimes necklaces or even my own hair can drive me crazy. (Again, crazy.)
  3. I’m the middle child of 5. I have an older sister and brother, and younger sister and brother.
  4. My first car was a Subaru. And I’ve owned 3 more since then. When you live in Utah, you have to drive a car that’s good in the snow.
  5. My first boyfriend disappeared off the face of the planet one day, and I still have no idea what happened to him.
Thank you Bree for stopping by! I cannot wait for The Lost Saint!
