Guest Post & Giveaway: Author Dee J. Adams

Today, I have author Dee J. Adams here with us talking about fears.

Welcome back to The Book Vixen Dee!

I’m Not Afraid Of That. Or Am I?

First, I’d like to give a big shout out to Brianna for having me back! Thank you, TBV!

Does anyone know one person who isn’t afraid of anything? Not one single thing? Honestly, I don’t think a person like that exists in the world. Everyone is scared of something at some time in their life. Whether it’s taking tests, going to interviews, or dealing with bugs or animals, I’ve never met anyone who didn’t have a fear of something.

In Dangerously Close, Ashley Bristol, a former outgoing law student who has been in a terrible accident, is now a recluse.  Though plastic surgery has given her a new face, the scar it leaves behind has turned her into a different woman. Uncomfortable with the face that stares back in her mirror, Ashley has used every excuse in the book to keep from going out in public. But when a fall down a flight of stairs steals her central vision, Ashley realizes she’s wasted precious years of her life by hiding out. It took losing her eyesight to see that she’d squandered the new life she’d been given. Frustrated with her current circumstances, Ashley vows to try and lead as normal a life as possible. She starts by adopting a dog and goes one step further when she befriends her new neighbor. Those two things are tremendous catalysts in helping her discover that life is worth living to the fullest no matter what tragedies might occur.

What about you? Did you have a fear of something that caused you to change your lifestyle? Or did you overcome your fear and feel a sense of freedom or accomplishment for facing it?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dee J. Adams is a writer, actor, and public speaker.  She draws upon her years of experience in Hollywood, both as an actress and a dialogue coach, as a source for much of her writing. Adams has worked with celebrities such as Roseanne, Betty White, Mathew Perry, and George Clooney on network sitcoms and national commercials. She is a member of the Screen Actors Guild, AFTRA, and RWA. She was thrilled to be chosen by Audible.com to narrate two of her own books, Danger Zone and Dangerously Close. Adams is also called upon frequently to give her “itching to pitch workshop” to non-profit organizations and events, including the Writer’s Association of America, Independent Writers Association of Southern California, and was a moderator of the 2012 L.A. Times Festival of Books at USC.  But she still dedicates most of her time to her first love - writing.

“I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas and moved to Los Angeles, California, where I acted in television and commercials for almost twenty years. I now write contemporary romantic suspense novels. I think life is tough enough as it is and my books are a good escape from reality. I'm a fan of happily ever after and that's what I deliver.”

Adams has been hailed by both her peers and readers as a “must read” new author.  She  is published by Carina Press, and two of her books in the Adrenaline Highs series: Dangerous Race and Danger Zone are available now.  The third book in the series, Dangerously Close, will be released on July 23rd, 2012.

  3. thanks for a great post and giveaway! Congrats on the newest release! I've read such awesome reviews for this series, it's at the top of my wishlist!

I'm afraid of small, pitchblack enclosed spaces. I have no depth perception due to my own vision loss so it definitely makes me claustrophobic!

    1. Hi Erin,
Glad you liked the post! I'm not a fan of small pitch black spaces either! I get clausty just thinking about it! Sorry about the vision loss! I've lost my sense of smell... Long story. LOL.

I'm not great with heights either, but as long as I don't look down, I can manage. Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Hi Brianna,
Thanks again for having me here! I love your place. I'm okay with airplanes. I've learned to just let go. (What's the expression... Let go, let God." ? Or something like that. I figure it's all out of my hands at that point so why worry. I just try and enjoy the reading time. LOL.

  7. I used to have this horrific fear of spiders as...but them my husband and I moved to the country 10 years ago and I can actualy kill them now. I still jump if a big one is in my path but no where near where I used to be.

    1. Hi Maria,
OMG! I hate spiders! Total arachnophobe here! Last week I had some GIANT flying roach crawl across my desk and I nearly hit the roof! I got the vacuum out so I could me distance when I disposed of the poor ugly thing. Yeesh...

  8. So many things, but I just ignore it and push through. What else are you going to do? Hiding in my apartment isn't an option. This is what lights are for at night, and choosing to call it excitement instead.

  9. Hi Maria,
Ha, I hear ya. I think the first step in conquering our fears is to face them, but I think most people know that. The trick is to actually do it. Thanks for coming by!

  10. Hi Brianna! Hi Dee! Oh, I can't wait to read Dangerously Close! Congrats on the release next week! You know, as I'm getting older, there's less things I'm afraid of. I think it's because I'm realizing how fast time flies and I don't want to miss out on something because I'm afraid. Now, if a snake were to slither up to me, I'd scream like crazy and hopefully not be frozen with fear so that I could run away. But besides that, I'm good. :)

  11. Hi Robin!

    Thanks!
Ohhh...man... not snakes! Another one of my fears. Spiders and snakes... Yeesh. Now I have the heebie jeebies. I'd like to think I'm less of things as I get older, but that could be just a false hope on my part. LOL.

  12. Stopped by to read your review and found a giveaway!! Thanks. Loved your comment under Things you didn't like about the book:)
My house was broken into and my son was here alone. I guess since he was a 6 foot teenager he scared them off when they saw him. Lucky for us! I am now paranoid whenever I leave my house and paid a lot of money for security. I still turn and wave at the house when I am leaving in case anyone is watching. Want them to think someone is home. My fear has gotten bigger instead of fading. Hope one day it will fade.

    1. Hi Laura,
That IS scary! I totally understand that fear. I'd feel the same way. I do think with time, your fear will fade, but I love that you wave when you leave! I may have to do that from now on.

  13. I am very afraid of hights, and I fear it is getting worse. Since the elevator at the office is being replaced, I have to use the stairs. Going up is no problem, but going down! My office is in an old mansion, and the stairs from two to one, are those old servants type of stairs. Narrow, steep, and with small steps. Hate them.

    1. Hi Aurian,
Oh wow! I think I'd hate that too. I would totally keep an extra pair of grippy sneakers/tennis shoes in my bag to take the stairs. I would be the one to trip/slip and fall. Maybe your office will find find a new home. On the first level. I'll keep good thoughts. :)

    1. Hi Wanda,
You totally hit on one of my fears. Roller coasters! I'm not great with heights, but I now refuse to ride roller coasters because that's combining height and speed! #forgetaboutit! LOL.

  15. I have a fear of heights and water. I go to the beach every year and have to go over a high bridge a long way over the water. Every year, I grip the steering wheel and only look forward as I drive. Every year, I contemplate not going. I continue to go for 15 years now, but it doesn't get any better . Not quite the answer to your question but it is my living nightmare!

    1. Hi Kelly,
I totally understand that fear. I have a similar issue driving in mountain passes... afraid to go over the edge. Yikes! I can totally see the worry with all that water beneath you, but YAY YOU for facing your fear every year and conquering the bridge!

  16. I've had a fear of waves and swimming in the ocean ever since I was a kid and got caught in a riptide. However, I learned to scuba dive 10 years ago and spend lots of vacation time in the ocean now. I'm still scared of getting caught in a current but I feel really good about having conquered my fear enough to dive.

    1. Hi Jen,
You've hit on one of my fears too. (Yes, another one!) I'm scared of ocean waves myself. Got taken down by a big one many years ago and got thrashed against some rocks. Not fun. Now I'm a big chicken around the ocean. It's pretty... but I keep my distance. Good for you for conquering your fear!

  18. Fear has not shaped my life much, but part of the reason I gave up sports was a fear of ridicule. This isn't a fear anywhere other than athletics, weirdly. Maybe thats because I have no talent in sports, but all my friends do. Anyways, the main reason I stopped was I would've been the smallest (in any sport other than gymnastics, whichI was to old to start) by at least 3inches and 15 pounds, and most of my competitors would have had 8inches, 40 pounds, and years more practice than me. I just couldn't preform honorablyin that situation.

  19. Hi Catalina,
I totally understand. My brother played professional tennis and I tried to play. I remember getting creamed on the court by a kid much younger than me and thinking, "Nope. Never doing this again!" I started running after that. I preferred a sport where I could only be up against myself. (Meaning my time. I always thought if I could continue to beat my time then I was winning. LOL.)
