Warning: This Book is Cursed! Final Conclusions by Abigail Roux

Typically when a book is released, I also put out a playlist to go with it. I love music, I love writing to music, and I love music that matches the books I write. It’s been a popular practice amongst my readers, and they’ve begun to expect it. So two months before a release, I’ll post the playlist.

I did the same thing with The Gravedigger’s Brawl, releasing a list of 30 songs in August. I jokingly added that as far as I knew, the songs were not haunted like the book was. The fact is, I don’t know anything. I don’t know why this story makes weird things happen. I don’t know what makes it stop and what makes it go. All I know is that I was hesitant to release an excerpt, because I also knew what the story was capable of.

I released it anyway because I’m an author and we feed on the souls of our readers. Almost immediately, reports began to pour in from readers about odd things happening after they read it. People who’d scoffed at my stories about the ghost story being haunted became believers. Others were disappointed if they read it and nothing weird happened.

One last laptop died as I was finishing edits. The LDC fizzled, which according to the Geek Squad dude was ‘weird’, and that brought the tally to five computers downed in the wake of this book. On the night that I posted the links to the first two chapters on the Riptide website, my Little Roux was in the bathtub by herself. The door slammed almost immediately after I posted the link, and needless to say there’s no way my 3-year old daughter vaulted out of the claw foot tub and ran across the wet marble floor to do that, then made it back into her water without making a splash in time for me to go in there and find her all Bambi-eyed in the tub.

At that point I considered the curse beyond confirmed. Both my mom and my dad have told me they will not be reading this book. Even readers who knew nothing about the curse when they read the excerpt, later messaged me to tell me about their computer dying or their phone making music play in the middle of the night. I held on to the hope that the curse was only active while I was working on the story. I was still editing it, so it was possible. But now it’s in production. It’s out there. And I’m holding my breath, waiting for the first e-mail from a reader to tell me about the ghost in their paperback.

I typically handle book releases in stride. I don’t get nervous easily, and I’d rather enjoy the release of a new work than fret about its reception. But I’ll admit something here and now, I’m terrified of this book. The really scary thing about this release is that I don’t know if the book is still cursed or not. I don’t know if I’ve just released a time-bomb into the general population, or if all the stories I’ve related over the last few days are just anecdotal now.

I never thought I would say this about one of my own books, about something I rely on for my livelihood, about something I poured years of work into, about something I think is a great story and I’m very proud of, but . . . be careful. If you just bought a brand new e-reader, be careful. If you haven’t backed up your files lately and you’re about to download The Gravedigger’s Brawl to your laptop, be careful.

If you don’t believe in ghost stories, be so so very careful. This particular ghost story seems to like to prove its point in spectacular ways.
