There’s a (somewhat) new genre in town, which you may have heard of – New Adult. Now, I’m not going to go into the in’s and out’s of the genre or what categorizes a book as ‘new adult’. That’s been done many a time. I’m just going to touch on what I like about it and we’re going to have a giveaway, courtesy of Avon Addicts and J9. How does that sound?
I’ve dabbled a bit in the New Adult category and so far, I’m really liking the genre. And I’m anxious to read more. I like that there’s a name for the novels with protagonists that are out of high school but still in those early adult years. YA was my thing (it satisfied my inner 17-year old self) but only until NA came around. I don’t like reading sex scenes in YA (it feels dirty to me to read about under aged people getting it on) but I like smut in my romance novels. And that’s where NA comes in. Come to think of it, it’s actually been a pretty long time since I’ve read a YA novel.
The only type of NA I’ve read so far is contemporary romance. I haven’t read paranormal romance NA or any other genre of NA. (Maybe I have; I’d have to take a close look at the character’s age and see.) For me, and for the moment, I like a compelling, sort of coming-of-age NA novel. I like that self-discovery element, especially one that leads to a HEA.
So tell me, do you read NA? Which genres of NA do you read? If you haven’t read NA, does it sound like something you’d like to start reading?

I'm still on the fence about this New adult genre. I mean I've only read 1 or 2 so I'm definitely not speaking for all of them, but after reading a few blurbs they all sound the same. Hero and Heroine are bad for each other. Bad pasts for one or both of them and they need each other to get through. There's usually sex but it's not as smutty as I enjoy in my romance reads. The thing that turns me off the most is that since it's coming-of-age story, the characters do a lot of stupid/childish/selfish things throughout the book and that just frustrates me most of the time.

ReplyDeleteI do read NA and I LOVE it. Now, when I go back and try to read a YA book it seems so juvenile to me, and YA was once my favorite genre. I think NA is the next big thing.

ReplyDeleteI don't know if I've specifically read this genre, but I'm glad it's growing as a specific thing - I'm still in college, and when I left high school I remember thinking "so... what do I read now?" It was hard to find books that appealed to me with characters my age, or in situations I could relate to. Here was this whole new period of being away from high school, starting college, and there were no books to tell me what might happen, what situations there might be.
ReplyDeleteI think the stories I write myself probably count as new adult. I was saying 'urban fantasy' before, but my main characters are 20-22, so I guess that puts things back in the NA bracket, then?
It'll be interesting to see how NA develops.
I actually love New Adult genre but the specifics of what makes it different or puts it in the middle of YA and Adult is a little hazy to me. I can't wait to see what new books and emerging authors will break in to this genre!
