Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway with Anne Marsh

Today I have author Anne Marsh here sharing an exclusive excerpt from her latest release, Slow Burn, which releases tomorrow. Welcome back to The Book Vixen Anne!

Excerpt

Jump thousand, look thousand, reach thousand, wait thousand, pull thousand. Check your canopy. Always know who has your back and where your lifeline is. The men who jump into the heat and the flames of California’s wildland fires live by these tenets. Former soldiers, they fought together on battlefields overseas; now, they return to Strong, California, each summer to fight forest fires. Eight ex-soldiers. One pilot. One plane. One team. Together, Strong’s smoke jumpers hold the line, defending their town from deadly flames.

I’m thrilled to share an exclusive excerpt from SLOW BURN, the second book in my new sexy contemporary series from Kensington Brava. The Smoke Jumper series kicked off in October with a reunion romance between Jack Donovan, a bad boy smoke jumper, and Lily Cortez. Now, it’s Evan Donovan’s turn to find love and happily-ever-after with Faye Duncan.

Faye Duncan is a woman on a mission. Her too brief, too-empty marriage to a Los Angeles fire fighter is over and the day the divorce becomes final finds her driving a red Corvette through the California mountains. She’s cashed out her checking account for the car and left behind a storage unit full of furniture and a job shooting Pottery Barn catalogs. That pretty furniture, those curtains and picture frames, are just empty sets for someone else’s life. She wants her own life. Somewhere, somehow, she took a wrong turn and now she knows she’s headed in the right direction. Now, she’s going somewhere. Adventure and life are calling Faye’s name and her new motto is Why not?

No one has ever mistaken Evan Donovan for someone nice. He’s a big, dark, scary-ass bastard—and that’s an asset, as far as he’s concerned. The pure size of him makes most men hesitate before they pick a fight and it’s not hard to imagine him chewing up the street in a Fallujah firefight. The rough and tough are all on the outside, however; he’d never admit it but, on the inside, he’s got a secret soft spot for those in need of rescue. When something’s broken, he wants to fix it. And, when he rescues Faye from a small barroom mishap, his life will never the same again.

“Where does that go?” She nodded toward a utilitarian set of metal stairs.

“Loft. We rig the chutes up there.”

She looked him over, and damned if he knew what was going on in that head of hers. “That works for me.” She took two steps toward those stairs, and right when he started to wonder what she was doing, she turned and held out her hand to him. “Well,” she said, “are you coming or not?”

That was a kicker. He stood there like an idiot and stared at her.

“Let’s go on up there, and I’ll kiss you some more.”

She didn’t wait for him to figure it out, just danced up the stairs ahead of him, all laughter and tease. He was definitely in foreign territory now. Hell. When had this happened to him? He scared the shit out of most of the world. He knew it. And yet she clearly wanted more of him, and his plans for a careful seduction flew right on out the goddamn window.

Because she was seducing him.

He scaled that stairway like it was a two-hundred-foot ponderosa and he had to get the top because he had a fire licking his ass. Women chased Rio. They chased Jack. Him? They gave him a wide berth. He hit the loft, and there she was, waiting for him, her back to the wall, watching him come. He knew he should say something. This wasn’t the right moment to keep his mouth shut, but, holy hell, what could he say to her? Other than please?

“Faye—” He got her name out, but, God, that name didn’t do her justice.

“Shh.” Leaning forward, she slipped her palm over his mouth. “There’s nothing to talk about, Evan. Just shut up and enjoy the ride.”

About the Author

A professional technical writer, Anne discovered that getting laid off was actually A Very Good Thing. While looking for her next writing gig, she picked up her pen (well, okay, she used her writing as an excuse to buy a new Apple laptop) and started writing. She soon discovered that writing was uncomfortably similar to sit-ups: add a few more crunches each day, wake up sore, but, by God, you will fit into that bikini. Or finish the book (she’s still working on the bikini).  Now she cranks out software manuals during the daylight hours– and writes about alpha shapeshifters the rest of the time.

Author: Anne Marsh
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: March 26, 2013

The second in Anne Marsh’s pulse-pounding Smoke Jumpers series ripples with nail-biting suspense and sensuality, giving an inside look at a special brand of hero and the kind of woman it takes to win him.

It’s not every man who’ll risk his life jumping into the flames of a woodland inferno. Then again, Evan Donovan isn’t like other men. No matter how great or how treacherous the challenge, he gets the job done. But when he agrees to look in on a friend’s ex-wife after a suspicious brushfire, Evan learns that some jobs are too hot to handle…

Faye Duncan is a photographer on a mission, shooting fires for a magazine. Her first encounter with a wildfire isn’t nearly as wild as her first night with Evan Donovan. Things really heat up when Evan learns she may have taken a photo of the arsonist setting the fires. Evan is determined to keep Faye safe—but first, he’ll have to open up his heart…
