Review: The Vampire Diaries by L.J. Smith

Title: The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening and The Struggle
Author: L.J. Smith
Format: Trade Paperback, Books #1 and #2 in a series
Source: Purchased from Barnes & Noble

 Synopsis from Goodreads:
Elena: the golden girl, the leader, the one who can have any boy she wants.
Stefan: brooding and mysterious, he seems to be the only one who can resist Elena, even as he struggles to protect her from the horrors that haunt his past.
Damon: sexy, dangerous, and driven by an urge for revenge against Stefan, the brother who betrayed him. Determined to have Elena, he'd kill to possess her.
Collected here in one volume for the first time, volumes one and two of The Vampire Diaries, the tale of two vampire brothers and the beautiful girl torn between them.

My Thoughts:
I'm going to keep this short and simple. I did not like this book. I forced myself to read it because I hate giving up on books. I finished the first 2 books in the series but when I started the 3rd book, I just couldn't read past page 20. I was really disappointed because I thought that I would really enjoy this series. I enjoy the TV series much better.

Book Elena is a selfish bitch looking out for only herself, whereas TV-Elena is more likable, more relatable. Book Stefan and Damon are okay but the storyline fell flat.

I enjoyed The Twilight Saga much than The Vampire Diaries. There, I said it. If you had to choose between the two, The Twilight Saga is definitely the better bet.

Sorry you didn't enjoy the book. It's hard for me to give up on a series. Glad you're enjoying the TV series though.

I started reading the first book right after the show began airing and I couldn't help but to read bits to my husband so we could share a chuckle. I got to about chapter five and haven't picked it up again since. I keep thinking I should, but I am not sure I want to continue. Your assessment of book Elena fits perfectly with my own image of her. I'm not impressed. I much prefer the television show.

You know I really haven't been wanting to pick up this series, although I've tried. Need to catch up in the program as well.

Fiction Vixen - TV Stefan is so hot!!

Literary Feline - really, there's no need to pick it back up. Just leave it right where it is. The TV show is way better.

Julie - it wasn't for me but you might enjoy it :) Ya never know.

PeaceLove&Pat - I couldn't even get past the 1st chapter in book #3. I can't wait to see what the TV show brings though.
