How To Get the Direct Link to Your Tweet

I've noticed from hosting contests and giveaways that not everybody knows how to get the direct link to their tweet. So I'm going to show you how to do it.

Scenario: You're entering a contest for an awesome book and you have the opportunity to get some extra entries by tweeting about the contest. Woo Hoo!! I love this way of getting extra entries. It's easy and it's quick to do. (I usually give extra entries for tweeting about my contests/giveaways to help spread the word about the contest/giveaway I'm hosting. Nothing works better or faster than spreading the word through the Twitter bird.)

Step 1 - Tweet!
Some bloggers have a "retweet" button built into each of their blog posts. Some may have a "Twitter” button at the bottom of each post (like I have on mine). This is awesome because you can Tweet about the contest/giveaway without leaving the page you are on. Another tweeting tool that I use is Sharoholic, an add-on for Firefox and Chrome browsers. If none of these options are available to you, simply open up a new browser tab and go to Twitter.

Step 2 - Get the URL to your Tweet!
Click on the link underneath your Tweet that says something along the lines of "1 minute ago" or "less than a minute ago"...(mine says "about 2 hours ago" in the picture below).

When you click on that hyperlink, it will take you to the webpage directly for that tweet. It will look like this:

The only tweet on this page is yours. See the URL I've circled the URL on top? That's the Direct Link to your tweet! It should look something like this:

http://twitter.com/thebookvixen/status/13612550691

Let's dissect this URL, shall we?

http://twitter.com/thebookvixen/status/13612550691

Where it says thebookvixen in this link, it will say YOUR Twitter user name in your link.

Where it says 13612550691 in this link, it will have its own unique number in your link. That unique number is the number of tweet it is. So for my particular tweet, it was the 13,612,550,691 tweet ever tweeted in the entire time that Twitter has existed! That means there have been over 13 BILLION tweets that have been tweeted. Cool, huh?

Here is what your URL should NOT look like:

http://twitter.com - that's the link to Twitter. Not you, not your tweet. Just the main URL for Twitter’s home page.

http://twitter.com/thebookvixen - that the link to your Twitter profile, not the direct link to your tweet.

http://twitter.com/thebookvixen/status - you're almost there but not quite. You're missing that crucial part.

http://twitter.com/thebookvixen/status/13612550691 – Ding, Ding, Ding! We have a winner folks!

Step3 - Copy and Paste!
Copy the URL in your browser for your tweet and paste it into the contest entry form and you're done! You've just snagged yourself some extra entries my friend!
